ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The act of seeing, as studied over the years by social scientists, artists, and humanitarians has always been something much more than the simple transfer of light through the eye. What we see is what we know— not only does it shape how we perceive the world, but it shapes how we understand each other as people.
As a photographer, the act of seeing, for me, has always been one of appreciation. The lens of a camera acts as a natural filter; an opportunity to see only the best in my subjects, without prejudice or fear. When I look through my camera, the world looks golden. Not only am I able to approach my subjects without the awkwardness or fear that sometimes comes with interacting with strangers— but under a lens, people reveal their best selves. The people they truly want, and strive, to be.
Photography isn’t just an act of seeing— it’s an act of revealing the intentions of the subject. The true spirit of the subject. In our society, where so much pressure is placed on the body and so much anxiety accompanies our need to present ourselves to the world, having a photographer that can see you as you try to be makes all the difference. It’s the optimism of the lens that lets us show our best selves to the world— and the ultimate compassion of the artist.
